Having now completed the BCU’s Foundation Safety and Rescue Training Course I’d like to share my views of the course with you all.
Andy Ing and Jeff Toser ran the course I attended.
The course was over two days, with both days running from 9-5.
We had eleven paddlers being coached, ages ranging from 15 year olds to 40+ and with paddling experience ranging from 3 weeks to myself at 16 years paddling.
The course was very relaxed and friendly.
We spent the first day both inside a classroom and outside doing practical training.
This started with a kit brief discussing safety features on all out kit from footwear to boats to throw lines and everything in between.
We moved on to rescues, starting with voice, reach and ending the day with throw line training. During this we learned multiple ways to recoil the throw line should your first throw not meet its target.
On the second day we got in our boats nice and early and started the day learning multiple ways to tow. We moved onto rescues by boat, using every craft you can think off. Canoe, kayak, sit on top, sea kayak we even rescued a K2.

I played the entrapped paddler whilst the others watched on as I was rescued several times in different ways.
We moved to all in rescues and followed that with scenarios with the group split in two. Five of us rescuing 6 paddlers in the water with different problems (unconscious, dislocated shoulder, panic and shock).
I found this course full of essential information and training.
I can’t recommend this enough to all paddlers. Anyone that paddles anywhere needs to do this course.
This brought to light my lack of practice . These skills when needed are needed immediately! No time to read the manual or figure something out.
The club is currently funding this course for anyone in the club.
